Look Patriotic, Not Ridiculous

Posted by The E on June 30, 2011

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt 4th of July

As everyone prepares to jet or drive or jitney off to their favorite summer destination for the long weekend, here are HABITUAL’s tips for pulling off the patriot look without going overboard. For July 4th beach barbecues or pool parties, we like a clean and classic look with a splash of red, white and blue.

Start with a pair of white denim shorts – a classic denim wash will work in a pinch, too. Then layer a soft chambray shirt over a solid tank – or even a bathing suit top – and don’t be afraid to roll up the sleeves. You can dump the shirt when things get too hot, or throw it back on once the sun goes down (and the mosquitos come out). You’ll probably be in bare feet, but if you’re going to wear shoes, give yourself a respite from the heels with some comfortable clogs or plain flip flops. Top the look off with red, white and blue accessories like rope bracelets, a striped watch strap, or a plain clutch to hold your sunscreen, credit card, sunglasses, and chapstick.

Styling for the 4th of JulyTops (Left to Right): Epaulet Red Chambray Utility Shirt, Equipment Major cotton-chambray shirt , Hanes Classic fit wide strap tank in white and red.
Belt: Mango Vintage style slim leather belt
Shorts: HABITUAL Teri shorts in Whiteout
Bracelets (L to R): J. Crew Miansai Rope bracelet in red and white, J. Crew Striped watch strap
Shoes: Dr. Scholl’s Wood original in white and navy
Clutches: Calre Vivier Foldover clutches in red pebble, royal blue pebble and white

Made in USA: Pollen Arts

Beeswax candles from Pollen Arts

We recently met the couple behind Pollen Arts, a small business that creates beeswax candles molded in the shape of antique bottles. The pair literally stumbled upon the idea when they found an old bottle laying in a tidepool by the beach. They devised a way to take a mold of the bottle, and then filled it with melted beeswax.  The results were stunning: a sweet smelling candle that serves as a hip-meets-antique decor object. They quickly experimented with milk bottles, apothecary bottles, inkwells, and even some of their own designs. As the candles burn down, the markings and designs on the bottle glow from within. Its no wonder their Etsy page has been a big hit.

The bottles demand a bit of a premium for a reason, they are still all handmade on the stove of a rehabbed winnebago in Long Beach, and the couple uses only 100% pure beeswax – no soy or paraffin wax blends here. As an added bonus, the beeswax is sustainable and helps support the disappearing bee colonies that farmers in states like California depend on to pollinate fruit and crops. We’re told they have plans to expand the concept to other antique objects soon – but we’ll have to wait and see exactly what that means.

Inspiration: HABITUAL Resort Color Story

Posted by The E on June 27, 2011

A number of different crystals inspiring the 2012 Resort collection

In April 2000, two miners were digging a tunnel deep below Naica Mountain in Mexico’s Chihuahua desert, and stumbled across a hidden cavern containing some of the largest cystals in the world. Cueva de los cristales, or Cave of Crystals, in the town of Delicias, is a 30 foot by 90 foot hollow space about 950 feet below ground and houses crystal structures as large as 36 feet long and weighing over 50 tons each. The crystals thrive in an environment that can only be described as hostile: temperatures as high as 120 degrees and 80 percent humidity keep the crystals from shattering like glass. While dangerous to researchers who enter the cave, the effect is remarkable, and some geologists have referred to it as the “Sistine Chapel of crystals”.

The grays and whites of the gypsum beauties hidden in this cave, and the brighter hues found in some of their smaller, but equally interesting cousins, serve as the color inspiration for the HABITUAL 2012 Resort collection. Crystals have long been revered for their beauty and energy, and we love how crystals usually trapped inside of dark rock take on a new life when they come into the light. Translucent whites and grays glow from within, and different varieties of crystal surprise the eyes with their ethereal shots of color.  We can’t get enough.

Ralph's Ices

Lucky for everyone, Ralph’s Ices is now open in Manhattan! We remember eating Ralph’s when we were just kids. It’s the same logo and the same taste, and our favorite flavor is Birthday Cake. Previously only open in Long Island and Staten Island, you can now swing by the new shop at East 24th Street and Lex.

On Trend: The Alterna-Tux

Posted by The E on June 23, 2011

Two looks from Louis Vuitton Resort 2012

Tuxedo pants have been trending for a season or two, showing up most recently in Louis Vuitton’s Resort 2012 show. We’ve also seen it in punk alterna-tux leather ensembles and even on stage at Coachella (Can anyone identify this band?).

Different takes on the Alterna-tux

We love the new color and textile combinations, like black leather with a white stripe and red pants with black piping. It’s also great to see a variety of silhouettes, from high waisted flares, to straight legs and even skinny cuts.

We’re actually doing our own take on the tuxedo pant for HABITUAL resort 2012.

Up Close and HABITUAL: NYLON Music Issue Party with Florence Welch

Posted by The E on June 22, 2011

Florence Welch at the Habitual-Nylon Dinner at the Mondrian Hotel Soho.

We met up with our friends at NYLON last night to celebrate their new Music issue, on stands now. The dinner and afterparty hosted by Editor-in-chief Marvin Scott Jarrett and the inimitable Florence Welch took place in the Mondrian Soho Hotel. We started with dinner in the beautiful penthouse, which ended up being delayed over an hour after fireworks unexpectedly went off over the Manhattan bridge, but the views of the city were well worth the wait.

Though we arrived a little late, the afterparty downstairs at Mister H was still in full swing. Guests like Leigh LeZark from the Misshapes and Harley Newton were treated to beats by DJ Josh Madden. We also spotted Portia de Rossi, Shenae Grimes of 90210, and “Twilight” alum Kellan Lutz, who is now the face of the Dylan George men’s line. Was he spying on us?

Florence faced the cameras in an Anna Sui floral print dress, paired with a black fedora, ankle strap pumps, and a Chanel Mademoiselle bag (don’t tell Gucci!) . She continues on tour with Florence + The Machine through the summer and will also open for U2 on select dates. If you are in New York, you can catch them playing Central Park this Friday.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Posted by The E on

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Poster

Sony has been turning up the shock marketing for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, David Fincher’s adaptation of the best selling book by late author Stieg Larsson. First a “mysterious” trailer “leaked” online that the studio claimed had been filmed illegally in a European theater. The gritty, fast-paced cut set to a Trent Reznor and Karon O cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song had the whole web’s attention.

But the trailer, now removed from Youtube and available on the film’s website, left up-and-comer Rooney Mara’s transformation to anti-heroine Lisbeth Salander somewhat to the imagination. Sony has now released a poster that reveals more of the character than we might have expected. You even have to verify your age to view it on the Sony website. If you have seen the original Swedish version of “Dragon Tattoo” starring Noomi Rapace, Mara has some big shoes to fill, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

We can’t wait for this to hit theaters in December. It looks to be a lot more “Se7en” than “Social Network”, but you never know, it could be the one that finds Fincher the Oscar he’s looking for.

On Trend: 70's Retro Chic

Posted by The E on June 17, 2011

 Rachel Zoe - Resort 2012

Perhaps influenced by the Charlie’s Angels reboot coming to ABC this fall, the 70’s trend that started in Spring 2011 has stayed strong through Fall and most recently made its mark in Resort 2012.  This throwback look is sticking around, and suddenly those round sunglasses, flowy floral prints, and high waisted swimsuits you’ve been eyeing can go safely into the buy category.

But pulling off 70’s retro without looking like a television extra can be difficult. Perhaps the easiest way to get the look is with a pair of 70′s inspired jeans, with some combination of a high waist, light wash, and flared leg.  HABITUAL’s Hannah Flare adds an additional 70′s groove with pintuck pocket detailing. For summer, we have been styling them with a cream story, adding some texture without getting too cluttered. Try a simple striped tank, solid cotton sweater, or lace shortsleeve. Round out the look with light brown accents evocative of 70’s leather tones. Add a light brown belt, a slouchy neutral bag, and a leather studded wedge that peeks out from the bottom of the pants. If you check the mirror and that is not quite enough hippie chic enough for you, add some round sunglasses in tortoise shell, or a wide brimmed, floppy hat to make the look even more literal.
