On the Road: Raoul's Soho

Posted by The E on February 28, 2012

Raoul's, Prince St. Soho, New York

Opened in the mid-seventies, Raoul’s is a Soho standard with an air of Europe, the way Soho used to be, before it became a haven of yuppies, communal tables, and high-fashion boutiques. While we try to hit the latest and greatest in New York hotspots whenever we’re in town, it’s hard to resist the consistent perfection of Raoul’s Steak au poivre with crispy frites, al dente haricot verts and the charming French décor: pressed tin ceiling, bistro tables, and Degas-style nudes. It might be old, but it still feels rightly hip to us, even if you can get away with a reservation on Open Table.

The Habit's 2012 Oscars Best Dressed

Posted by The E on February 27, 2012

The big winner at last night’s Academy Awards was The Artist, but our eyes were on the red carpet (and Angelina Jolie’s leg). Here’s our pick of top Oscar gowns:

Jessica Chastain. This bold black and gold strapless gown by Alexander McQueen was a perfect choice for her striking skin tone and red hair. Her castmate Octavia Spencer may have taken home the trophy, but Jessica took home best dressed.

Milla Jovovich. For her first ever Oscars appearance, the model-turned-actress was sleek and sexy in a white one shoulder look by Elie Saab. She was one of the first on the carpet and she set the bar high for a very fashionable evening.

Gwyneth Paltrow. Always the minimalist, we loved the clean white look she chose from Tom Ford, and the built in cape says “I’m here to have fun.” She was all business later, dropping the cape and baring her shoulders to present with Robert Downey Jr.

Looking for design inspiration or just beautiful photos to peruse during class or work? Then you should definitely bookmark KristinaKlarin.Blogspot.com. All of the images Kristina Klarin posts tell a luscious color story, and she usually also pulls out the color palette underneath, which lends a huge sense of utility, whether you are working in the design field or just trying to pick a new paint scheme for your bathroom. As much as we love our books and magazines, blogs that lend a new perspective are their own category of required reading, and Kristina deserves credit for making something as simple as natural photography and color swatches into an everyday inspiration.

On Trend: Tribune Standard Fall 2012 Collection

Posted by The E on February 22, 2012

Tribune Standard Fall 2012 Collection

As always, we ooh-ed and ahh-ed at the gorgeous new collections during New York Fashion Week, but the one collection that we just cannot stop thinking about is the Tribune Standard Fall 2012 RTW Collection. You’ll see a pheasant and feather motif throughout, including a gorgeous rust and ochre pheasant feather signature print. We loved the hyper-feminine silhouettes of the skirts and dresses, and the general focus on the waist. One of our favorite looks was a tweed softly-pleated straight leg trouser with cream pumps, a fragile cream lace top and the rust belt.  They even make the super slinky gold lame-look cool again! Style.com perfectly describes the Tribune Standard Fall 2012 Collection as, “more ladylike than louche, and felt, happily, timeless.”

Obsession: Charlotte Olympia

Posted by The E on February 16, 2012

Charlotte Olympia

We are pretty much in love London-based shoe brand Charlotte Olympia. The incredibly fun and quirky brand was formed in 2007 under the creative direction of Charlotte Dellal, who combines everything we admire in a brand: a sense of humor, unique perspective, incredibly quality and attention to detail. Dellal’s tongue-in-cheek approach can be seen in the adorable Kitty flats, a perfect example of her ‘fashion is fun’ mantra. Or take a look at her Spring/Summer 2012 styles featuring organic leaf details that showcase the impeccable craftsmanship.

Charlotte Dellal tells Vogue UK that she believes in Girl Power, and so do we – the HABITUAL team is almost completely female! Look for big things from Charlotte Olympia this spring, as well, including the debut of their bridal shoe collection in April, a New York store opening next month and the completion of their first pre-collection!

Required Reading: Juxtapoz

Posted by The E on February 14, 2012

Juxtapoz February 2012

We weren’t sure whether to put this under our ‘Required Reading’ or ‘Inspiration’ category, but for those unfamiliar with Juxtapoz, it is a monthly magazine that highlights the most interest art talent of the modern times. Juxatpoz describes the art they feature as “unpretentious and raw,” and I think that’s what we like most about this magazine. It’s always something new and refreshing to read. Many people consider it more graffiti or pop surrealist type of art – either way it provide for amazing inspiration across the board.

This month’s issue features the work of Australian artist Jeremy Geddes. Our favorite painting of his is “A Perfect Vacuum.” “A Perfect Vacuum” is also a book by Stanislaw Lem, which is included in the painting.
