On Trend: Essie's 2012 Summer Collection

Posted by The E on May 31, 2012

Every summer, we can’t wait to see Essie’s newest summer collection and this year they did not disappoint. From neon to pastel to a touch shimmer, they always offer fun new shades for everyone. We decided to pair our favorite colors with some of our favorite denim. What better way to show off your colorful new pedi than in sandals and pumps in your favorite pair of denim? Let us know what you think!

Habitual Denim/Essie 2012 Summer Collection

For a punch of color, we’d pair the Amaranth in Pure with a creamy carnation pink like “Off the Shoulder,” or  for more of a orange neon oriented look try the “Fear Or Desire” shade. And for a more tonal feel, the Harrison jean in Serene would look great with Essie’s  periwinkle with a touch of shimmer, “Bikini So Teeny”. Our Hayworth in Rustic Pink can easily be accented with a bronze-y bit of gold glitter color, like “All Tied Up”. And finally, the best way to show off your bright pin toes like “Cascade Cool” is by wearing your favorite pair of white denim like our Harrison jean in Snowfall. A Common Name’s LA Street Art

Posted by The E on May 24, 2012

A Common NameOver the past couple of months A Common Name, a.k.a. Julian Paige Smith, has been working on a street art project around Los Angeles. As a freelance artist and graphic designer one would expect her to be creating 2D installations – instead she has been aweing unexpected Los Angelino’s and visitors alike with her unexpected 3D treasures.

The project consists of amazingly intricate paper formations that bring the magic of real geodes, crystal, quartz, and other mineral formations normally found in nature, into everyday life within the bustling city of Los Angeles. The point of the project is not for everyone to notice these treasures (and many will not) and for them to be affected by the weather and other elements so they do not last forever.

Since the beginning of the project A Common Name has made 12 sculptures, some of which have since disappeared, but all of which can be found integrated throughout the city into the holes of buildings and pipes, taking the mundane and making it “sparkle.” This Memorial Weekend is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy a relaxing long weekend and you can be sure that we will be going on our own scavenger hunt to find the remaining sculptures.

If you want to also experience these fun and unique pieces, follow the map below and set out on the hunt for A Common Name’s “Geode” Street Art Project.

Color Inspiration: Nude

Posted by The E on May 23, 2012

Alice in Kiss

We have noticed that the nude (and any skin-based) hue has recently been trending. It’s a versatile shade that has become a new neutral basic color that you can wear year round. And last month, we shared a first look at our new Alice Skinny in Kiss that was available for pre-order at Nordstrom. It is now available for purchase and so we thought we’d share with you how HABITUAL found inspiration for our own shade of nude, “Kiss.”

The way that the design team came about creating the nude color was by Design Director Jennifer Wojinski’s fascination of anything and everything nude. She says, “From natural nudes in this one 1800’s costume to a classic pair of leather flats to the natural hues of flower petals, I was inspired by everything!” The design team went for something that would simulate leather so they decided to test out shades on our favorite coated denim. After much trial and error, the design team eventually ended up with a darker shade of nude than expected and added a little “Kiss” of pink. Take a look at  our Pinterest page for a an in-depth look at more of our design team’s Color Inspiration boards.

Lisa Rinna

Soap star Lisa Rinna was recently seen wearing our HABITUAL Alice Skinny coated denim jeans in Licorice at the Pantages Theatre Opening Night performance of ‘Chicago’ in Los Angeles.  Lisa looked chic and sophisticated, completing her ensemble with a sequined top, blazer and heels. Although Rinna sat in the audience this time, in 2009, she actually starred in “Chicago” as Roxie Hart along with her husband Harry Hamlin as Billy Flynn!

Made in the USA: Beam & Anchor

Posted by The E on

Beam & Anchor

After years of dreaming, Robert and Jocelyn Rahm were able to create and open a collaborative workshop for the Portland community of dedicated, likeminded artisans. In the heavily industrial area of north Portland Robert and Jocelyn found a beautiful yet neglected 7,000 square foot warehouse, which after 8 months of persuasion, finally became theirs. The space celebrates innovation, friendship, and quality goods all in a community to nurture ideas.

Robert & Jocelyn’s vision is realized as Beam & Anchor has always been a haven for artists, makers, upholsterers, carpenters and beautiful-thing-lovers to unite in a “home,” supporting each other through encouragement and a constant infusion of new ideas, as they work their magic to craft the ornately detailed soaps, furniture, bags and other goods selling in the retail store below. The warehouse is reminiscent of this idea with an open kitchen and large dining table (as a gathering space), floor-to-ceiling curtains rather than walls separating the workshops, and a glass viewing panel giving visitors an inside look at how the furniture comes together. The Rahms also bring the public into their “family” through hosting community events such as,  maker networking suppers and an upcoming summer music series.

Beam & Anchor just opened earlier this spring and will continue to draw people from all over through its simple and central idea of community – and you can be sure that the next time we’re in Portland we will be stopping by to not only say “hello” but to also get our hands on this priceless merchandise.

Beam & Anchor can be found at:  2710 N Interstate Ave. Portland, OR 97227

Inspiration: George Harrison

Harrison Flare in Nylon Magazine

It is only appropriate that Nylon Magazine featured our Harrison Flare in Snowfall in their June/July 2012 Music Issue. This bell-bottom cut wasn’t named Harrison at random – the style was inspired by the one and only George Harrison. HABITUAL Design Director Jennifer Wojinski, the brain behind it all, grew up wearing bell bottoms in the 70’s, and explains, “My parents listened to George Harrison, The Eagles – you name it! There is a childhood love and fondness with this association. And I think George Harrison’s son Dhani Harrison is really great too!” So when you put these Harrison’s on – remember you’re grooving with our Beatles-inspired bell bottoms!
