James by James: ‘Rebel’ MOCA Exhibit

Posted by The E on May 17, 2012

The multi-faceted and multi-talented James Franco has further validated his suaveness by adding ‘art curator’ to his already extensive list of accomplishments. The actor-turned student-turned author-turned professor-turned an actor playing an artist (named Franco) on “General Hospital”- turned documentary filmmaker is continuing to wow Hollywood with his newly conceived MOCA exhibit “Rebel”, paying homage to the 1955 James Dean movie “Rebel Without a Cause”.

The exhibit is now open to the public through June 23rd at JF Chen, the Hollywood space of furniture dealer Joel Chen. The venue, along with the pieces on display, further add to the innovative, and widely misunderstood, projects Franco undertakes; as the venue has been slammed as a conflict of interest due to the commercial space and the pieces on display make bold statements through the meshing of pop culture and fine art.

Bringing together other pieces of work including paintings, sculpture, drawing, video installation and multimedia in conjunction with Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, Douglas Gordon, Aaron Young, Paul and Damon McCarthy and Harmony Korine, “Rebel” includes stunt-like artwork and multiple films using Franco as the star subject. As the 1955 film explored many taboo topics of the time you can expect to see some thought-provoking work including violent videos, sexual sculptures and subliminal nods to drug use all framed by iconic, Hollywood structures.

Franco has been fascinated and intertwined with the image of James Dean for years and was also captivated by the film this exhibit celebrates as a teenager. His 2001 portrayal of James Dean also earned him a Golden Globe. The 50th anniversary of Dean’s death 7 years ago inspired Franco to come up with an unconventional way to celebrate this icon, and visually portray “the first mainstream American movie that dealt with teenagers on their own terms.” It’s Franco’s idea of using Dean’s “film as a source for inspiration and building off that to create new work” that has us highly intrigued. Whether you’re a film junkie, art freak, or a fan of either James this is something you must take time out of your weekend to experience – and why not, admission is free!

When: Tuesday, May 15 through Saturday, June 23 – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: J.F. Chen, 941 North Highland Avenue

Color Inspiration: Yellow

Almas Zip Skinny in Tapestry

Last fall we saw Acid Yellow trending in all the Spring 2012 lines at the Paris and London Fashion Weeks.  This spring, we have our own unique take on the Yellow trend. Our mid-range acid yellow-dyed denim falls somewhere between a pastel and gold, creating a beautiful wash we like to call “Tapestry.” We absolutely adore how this resilient tone has taken on a strong presence in so many spring looks. In the May issue of InStyle, our Tapestry Almas Zip Skinny’s were cleverly paired with a sleepwear top for a cool casual look.

The best thing about the color Yellow is that not only is it a spring favorite, but Yellow absolutely calls out summer too! As Spring 2012 storms in and summer quickly approaches, we wanted to share some of our favorite Yellow color inspirations for the coming seasons. Check out our Pinterest page for a an in-depth look at our design team’s “Color Inspiration: Yellow” board. You won’t want to miss it!

Sofia Vergara

One of the funniest ladies on television these days, Sofia Vergara, was spotted wearing HABITUAL Hayworth Flare jeans in Ablaze. The “Modern Family” star was out shopping at SCOOP NYC in New York when she was seen in her Hayworth Flare jeans which she paired with a bright orange leather jacket – the perfect idea for staying warm on a cool day while still adding a fun pop of color for spring.

Bands We Love: Best Coast

Posted by The E on May 11, 2012

Best CoastMaking music that evokes their love and the culture of California is the motto for this week’s band we love. Out of the hundreds of indie bands in California, Best Coast has thundered past the competition and intense level of scrutiny to become a phenomenal success. The duo prides themselves on straightforward love and relationship pop songs that tell simple stories, inspired by 60s and 70s California culture. And with influences such as Fleetwood Mac and the Beach Boys and the debut of their first album at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, it’s no surprise that Best Coast’s sounds appeal to almost everyone.

As the release of their second album, The Only Place, fast approaches (you can get it on May 15th) Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno are gearing up for their first North American tour. Best Coast will continue to gain new fans and wow audiences from every corner of the country with their balance of imperfect sounds and friendly hooks, as they begin their 28 show tour next week. As everyone can relate to “loving someone so much, they make you crazy” we can’t wait to see Best Coast kick everything off in the city going back to their California roots, Los Angeles.

Nina Dobrev in HABITUAL Black Angelina Cigarette Skinny jeansWhile Nina Dobrev graced the red carpet in Donna Karan Atelier at the Met Ball, earlier that day she was sporting a more casual look, wearing HABITUAL Black Angelina Cigarette Skinny jeans in New York City. The day after the Met Ball, Nina was spotted again wearing HABITUAL Alice Skinny coated denim jeans in Dark Feather, while leaving the Trump Soho Hotel in NYC with her boyfriend and The Vampire Diaries co-star, Ian Somerhalder. We think Nina effortlessly pulls off the casual look with style and definitely “got the habit” this week in New York!

This year’s fashion’s Oscars, the Met Gala, was another spectacular evening that showcased amazingly gorgeous gowns. Here’s our pick of top 2012 Met Gala gowns:

The French actress, Marion Cotillard, look absolutely stunning in her Dior gown. We love the sheerness and playfulness on this textured dress.

Anna Wintour looked exceptionally sophisticated in a Schiaparelli-inspired Prada dress. We love the lobster detail on her gown.

From the beaded detail on her gown, to the deco earrings and rich lipstick, Camilla Belle was a classic beauty in Ralph Lauren.

Artist to Know: Emma Sheldrake

Posted by The E on May 8, 2012

Emma SheldrakeWe have recently fallen in love with an artist whose expressive style, bold use of color and pop art influences has left us enchanted. Emma Sheldrake is an artist who came from an artistic family and uses her signature style to reflect the liberating passion and energy she gets from her craft.

Recently featured in Adore Magazine, Sheldrake’s paintings center around the stereotyped beauty in the fashion industry. She focuses on a subject’s eyes, and the way they seduce and “ignite a piece, traveling around the room with the onlooker.” For the past six years Sheldrake has had her work in over 40 exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas – and her unique style of painting is not going unnoticed. We can’t wait for the world to take notice of her amazing talent and will definitely be the first one’s there when she eventually makes her U.S. debut.

The story of this 85-year-old’s life will not only warm your heart but give you a new appreciation for the art of sushi-making. Gelb’s film not only portrays the art of perfecting your craft and a loving relationship between a father and son – it also shows Jiro’s drive and motivation to consistently learn, even as he is considered to be the best sushi chef in the world.

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI will not only tickle your taste buds but give you a boost of inspiration to follow your dreams. Chef Jiro has dedicated his life to perfecting the finesse and presentation of each of his impeccable sushi creations – while also being the only sushi chef to be awarded 3 Michelin stars.
