Balmain Fall 2012: Inspired By Fabergé

Posted by The E on July 30, 2012

Balmain Fall 2012

As you may know from our previous posts about the Surrealist movement being the inspiration for our Fall 2012 line, almost all of HABITUAL’s pieces are influenced and inspired by art. Another instance of art influencing fashion that HABITUAL truly admires is Balmain’s Fall 2012 collection, which was said to be inspired by Fabergé eggs, specifically Elizabeth Taylor’s. Peter Carl Fabergé, “Imperial Jeweler to the Tsars,” was best known for being the master goldsmith and jeweler for the Russian Royal family, as well as many other ruling families of Europe during the 19th and 20th century. Balman’s Fall 2012 line includes intricate details of pearls, golds and florals. Fashionista explains, “These pieces look as precious as Fabergé eggs, like they’ll warrant the undoubtedly exorbitant price tag that will be attached to them.” Balmain’s line is absolutely exquisite, and you can definitely Fabergé’s lavish artwork is definitely shown through.

And if you want to get a closer look at the inspiration behind Balman’s collection, Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, has Fabergé’s pieces on display in their “Fabergé: Imperial Jeweler to the Tsars” exhibit, which is going on now until January 6, 2013.

Habitual Fall 2012 Brand Image

Remember when we were showing you sneak peeks of a photo shoot from last month? Well, here is the first official image from that photo shoot, featured in the August issue of Nylon! We love how our Fall 2012 brand images came out – from the graininess in the photos, to the looks we were able to capture from the model, to the outfits styled with our favorite denim (of course); we could go on…it was all too much fun! What do you all think? We’ll show more soon…

5 Questions: Kimmy Erin Ratican

Posted by The E on July 25, 2012

Kimmy Erin

Kimmy Erin Ratican is no stranger to Hollywood’s glamour and glitz. Originally from Los Angeles, the fashion and beauty expert started her fashion career at the young age of 16, as she was already found styling magazine spreads all around the Los Angeles area.  She went on to study Creative Writing at the University of Southern California, while also gaining fashion and editorial experience at Women’s Wear Daily and W Magazine internships. After school, Kimmy started freelancing as a writer, stylist, merchandiser and on-air hostess, and is now regularly asked for her expert advice by KTLA, Good Day LA, Women’s Health and Women’s Wear Daily, to name a few. When Kimmy’s not styling starlets (like Katherine Heigl, Anna Sophia Robb, Olivia Munn, Lauren Conrad and many more!), musicians, brides-to-be, and industry VIPs, you can find her writing on her own blog as well as,  and The Hollywood Reporter.

The Habitual team adores Kimmy for her unique style and bubbly personality.  We wanted to learn a little more about her, so we asked her our 5 questions…

New York or Los Angeles, and why?

Absolutely LA! I was lucky enough to spend some time in New York as a fashion and beauty editor and got to know it very well, but it was never a city that resonated with me as a born and bred Angeleno. But there is an undeniable unique exclusivity that comes with being in the center of and a part of the center of American fashion and beauty that I don’t think Los Angeles quite replicates for me. But Los Angeles wins because of my lifestyle, general friendliness, getting to carry a heavier purse and wear more daring heels (the uptick to a limited subway system), and accessibility to nature and great light.

Give us a sense of your personal style?

I’m a dire Francophile and my style reflects that Parisian feel of relaxed, menswear-inspired femininity. I love slouchy jeans with a heel, blazers with mini’s, tailored shorts with ruffles.

You’re best known for being a stylist, but what do you consider your greatest talent?

I’m also a writer! I don’t spend enough of my free time  (ha ha! free time!) writing, but I do play with blogging and fiction when I can! But shopping is such an ingrained part of me, that I can’t help but admit (well, boast, really) that I consider my bargain-shopping skills to be top-notch.

What’s your daily habit?

I have a lovely ritual every morning, where I make the most delicious almond milk latte’s with my boyfriend which we drink as we check our emails and share news headlines and funny videos. I’m also on YouTube every single day. I’m very excited about all the access to fashion that site brings — I hope more fashion people will log in and get lost in gorgeous shows, interviews, and tips. The beauty world has it covered, but fashion is a whole new world on the Tubes! Love it.

What’s one thing in your closet you could never give up? And what’s your go-to piece in the closet right now?

I would die if anything happened to my grandmother’s fur coat. DIE. The end. Done. It’s the one thing I’d save in my house from a fire.

I have 3 go to’s right now in my closet:

1. My habitual Moto waxed denim jeans in black

2. My Rag & Bone pullovers. Summer sweaters are my jam right now. Theirs are le best (also love Helmut Lang’s and Brochu Walker’s, but r&b just killed it this summer).

3. My Jean Michele-Cazabat Isola pumps. They’re not too high and they are the best black heel I’ve ever purchased.

BONUS: Where do you get styling inspiration from?

My friends! I have a very set kind of style; I love what I love and I do what I do so I tend to only see what I see in a collection. But my fashionable friends see things differently and force me to see things styled in new ways. I feel so lucky to be surrounded by a set of unique friends who inspire me.

Obsession: Draw Coffee

Posted by The E on July 24, 2012

Draw Coffee - Portland Coffee Crawl

“Coffee inspires creativity.” Yes, the caffeine in coffee may help most of us be more creative and focused, but artist Ben Blake is literally inspired by coffee. Ben Blake sketches on coffee filters – most of his work can be found on his site Draw Coffee. His site not only shares his sketches, but he also shares anything and everything about coffee.  Blake shared with Cool Hunting that he starting drawing when he was a kid and his love for coffee began in college (and it wasn’t just to keep him awake!). As he became more interested in coffee, he started making doodles on coffee filters. His work has been noticed by the coffee industry, as he has already collaborated with ZPM Espresso and Kuma Coffee. We especially love his sketch from his Portland Coffee Crawl (above), where he incorporated all of the coffee spots he visited and shares about it in his post. Coffee and art? Two things the Habitual team loves.

Who's Got The Habit: Emily VanCamp

Posted by The E on July 23, 2012

emilyOut on the town in our Alice Skinny coated jeans in Dark Feather, Emily VanCamp was spotted wearing HABITUAL with boyfriend and Revenge co-star, Joshua Bowman, at the Playhouse Club in Los Angeles. Emily paired her Alice Skinny coated jeans with a black blouse and stylish boots. The Dark Feather denim is the perfect fit with her ‘revenge’ driven character as the stunning lead in Revenge. We love to see that this young star is starting a new habit.

The World’s First Hermès Decorated Apartment

Posted by The E on July 20, 2012

French fashion giant Hermes is giving fans of the brand everything they could want in the first ever Hermès-decorated apartment. The 6,232 square-foot, five bedroom home (located at The Marq on Paterson Hill in Singapore) oozes the brand’s signature and classic style with specially made Hermès furniture, fabrics, rugs, carpets, wallpaper and made-to-measure leather upholstered items!

The one of a kind project was created by creative director of La Table Hermès, Yves Taralon, and Michelle Cheong, the creative director of the design team at SC Global, and is the perfect way for the fashion house to express their high values of excellence throughout every aspect of life right down to the home.

Of course, this would be a dream to live somewhere as fabulous as this (or even to just stay for a night), but unfortunately the apartment is for private events only. For now, we are more than content to live vicariously through photos of this wondrous space dreaming Hermès dreams.

Color Inspiration: Red

Posted by The E on July 19, 2012

Amalia in Vermillion

What color is sure to always make a statement? Red. From our earliest Alice in Vermillion that got us hooked on how the color pops on denim to one of our new fall favorites Amalia in Vermillion, we think that the brilliant red orange color vermillion denim is the perfect combination of statement and class. In its naturally occurring form, vermilion is actually mercuric sulfide, a toxic compound also known as “cinnabar,” luckily for us the dyes and paints of today are non-toxic. Take a look back and read about the origins of the eye catching color.

As our design team continued to experiment with and discover new shades of red, it resulted in one of our summer favorites Almas Hi Rise Skinny in Acid Red and this fall’s stunning Alice Skinny in Devil Red. We continue to create and come up with new combinations of red denim; ever wonder where our design team finds inspiration for all of these different shades of red? Take a look at our Pinterest page for an in-depth look at our design team’s “Color Inspiration: Red” board.
