Inspiration: Georgia O'Keeffe

Seaweed II

This beautiful watercolor by Georgia O’Keeffe has provided much inspiration for our Spring 2013 line. We love the muted yet rich colors O’Keeffe uses to capture a wonderful snapshot of nature. According to Barbara Lynes, this painting (above) was inspired by the artist’s early visits to York Beach, Maine in the 1920s. Her work is borderline abstract and many of her paintings remind us of the satellite imagery –O’ Keeffe’s paintings and satellite imagery are both looking at nature in abstract, expressing beauty in shape, pattern and color… just from two very different perspectives. Can you tell which one is the painting and satellite snapshot below?

Obsession: The Color Run

Color Run

Forget about hitting the gym for that much wanted summer body because exercising just got a whole lot more exciting with The Color Run. Otherwise known as the Happiest 5k on the Planet, this national paint race encourages participants to get healthy, be happy, and give back to the community. While running side by side with thousands of people, participants are doused with colors each step of the way. Luckily, the fun doesn’t stop there. Once the finish line is crossed, there is a post-run “Color Festival” where the memory-making continues. Each run collects donations that is given to a local charity in each city visited.  There are only two rules for those of you considering taking part in this spectacular event: begin the day wearing white and finish the day in color. What are you waiting for?

Obsession: Eldoop Design

Posted by The E on March 6, 2013

For all of you dog lovers out there, your beloved furry friend can now show full ownership over its treat jar, and not just in writing, but with an actual re-creation of themselves!  Eldoop (spelled poodle backwards) Design, is a ceramic company that creates custom handmade, personalized clay collectibles. After a successful career in the home entertainment business, Felice Fleisher – the Toronto-based founder and designer- decided she wanted to create a company combining two of her favorite things — ceramics and her puppy!  Each one of Eldoop’s creations is completely unique — you’ll never find a duplicate. The process starts with the customer/owner sending a photo of their dog to Eldoop.  Felice studies the photo to recreate the pup (any animal really!) into a 3-D clay form, which is then glazed and painted. The end result: a beautiful ceramic treat jar!  Felice says that these days she spends most of her time in her studio designing and creating ceramic pieces- mostly in the form of custom made dog treat jars and urns, but also creating beautiful sculptures, bowls and cookie jars for humans!
I guess we can never do enough for man’s best friend – our pups!

Single Shot/Inspiration: Spring 2013

Posted by The E on March 4, 2013

Single Shot

The Guardian posted images shot from European Space Agencyand Nasa satellites this past January, from glaciers to cloud shapes to snow-covered deserts all over the world. One image really stood out to us and even fits into the color inspiration and feel of our Spring 2013 line – the shot taken of the Payún volcanic field of Argentina that was formed over hundreds of thousands of years. What’s even more fascinating is that the color you see isn’t the real color of the land, and is made from a combination of visible and infrared light. Like any map key, green indicates vegetation, black indicates lava flows, and orange is bare rock rich in iron oxides. Fashion always seems to find a way to connect back to nature…
