Bands We Love: Dumbfoundead

Posted by The E on April 30, 2013

Best known for his witty rhymes, infectious attitude and playful vibe, Jonathan Park, also known by his stage name Dumbfoundead, is a native Los Angeles rapper of Korean descent.

He has been dubbed by NPR as “A Rising Star In A Genre In Transition”.   Their reasoning behind this is because when you hear the word “rapper” most people envision Jay-Z wearing a scary mask or Ice Cube snarling.  However, Jonathan is the complete opposite from your typical rapper and comes off as a playful goofy guy who is quick witted and really intelligent.

Jonathan is contributing to breaking the typical rapper stereotype by creating rap music with his own cultural twist.  He believes Asian rappers didn’t step into the hip-hop scene in large numbers initially because they hadn’t figured out they could broaden the genre with their own cultural spin. They pictured rap as African-American, and hesitated to break that mold.

In the past couple of years, he has been establishing a strong online presence and has received the most views for his song   “Are We There Yet”.  In this song he talks about the struggles of being born to Korean refuges in Argentina then being taken to Mexico and finally smuggled into the U.S.  Throughout the song, he praises his mother for giving up her dream and handing it down to him. We love this inspiring upbeat song and cannot stop playing it in our offices!  What do you guys think?

Bands We Love: Movits!

Posted by The E on April 25, 2013

Named after Fader Movitz, a character in a story by an 18th-century Swedish poet, this Swedish band, Movits!, is one of the most eclectic bands we have listened to in awhile.  They are a Swedish-hip hop-swing band that started pretty mainstream as an acoustic hip hop reggae band . The DJ and multi-instrumentalist of the band Anders Rensfeltdt said. “It was just acoustic guitar, organ and cajun.” Eventually, though, inspired by the drums and the horns of the swing era, they started working on the music that turned into their first album called, Äppelknyckarjazz, which translates to Apple swiper jazz or scrumping jazz in English, and is referencing the apple-stealing trousers worn by Swedish street kids in the ’30s and ’40s. After being featured on The Colbert Report, Movits! received quick fame and they claim that was the reason for their popularity. We love their unique sounds and style; listen for yourselves. Here’s one of their newest singles, Nitroglycerin:

Habitual Honors Denim Day

Posted by The E on April 24, 2013

Denim Day

Now in its 14th year (held on April 24th during Sexual Assault Awareness Month) Peace Over Violence has organized Denim Day in LA, NYC and USA. Under POV’s leadership, Denim Day has grown into a national movement.   In 2011, more than 2 million Americans participated in Denim Day.  It is a rape prevention education campaign, where community members, elected officials, businesses and students are asked to make a social statement by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against misconceptions that surround sexual assault.

Denim Day recalls an Italian court case that sparked international outrage when judges did not convict a rapist because the victim wore jeans.  The judges ruled that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them, thus implying consent.

Support the cause by wearing your favorite pair of jeans today!  To find out more information about Denim Day or donate visit Denim Day’s website. We can help the cause one pair of jeans at a time!

Happy Earth Day!

Posted by The E on April 22, 2013

In honor of Earth Day, here’s an amazing satellite image of the earth, which we actually used for inspiration for our Spring 2013 line. The Earth looks like a piece of art — we love the marbled colors and texture. The image of the Great Sandy Desert in Australia.

What are you doing in honor of Earth Day?

Made in the USA: Stock Manufacturing Co.

Posted by The E on April 18, 2013

Stock Manufacturing Co.

With one of our favorite summer music festivals (Lollapalooza) getting closer and closer, we can’t help but get a little nostalgic for the Windy City. What you may not know is that Chicago is actually a mecca for fashion, and is currently turning out some of the best designers and fashion start-ups. One of these companies shaking up the fashion scene is Stock Manufacturing Co. Launched back in early February, Stock Mfg. Co. has a fairly simple mission: to produce high-quality, American-made fashion at the lowest possible price. How do they do this you may ask? By collaborating with emerging designers, and every couple of weeks featuring pre-sales of the designer’s pieces and designs on their site ( Similar to Kickstarter, the Stock Manufacturing consumer then gets to decide if the item(s) featured on the site should get produced or not. Once enough people purchase the item during the pre-sale Stock Mfg. will finance and manufacture the product in-house within their factory. And it gets even better! Once an item is approved Stock Mfg. doesn’t charge any additional fees to the designer, or charge shipping fees! Pretty cool right?

We love this idea of not only supporting emerging talent but also giving the consumer a voice in what they are purchasing. This is one cool company, that five cool guys (with a crazy amount of fashion experience) have really pulled off. To see what is on the docket for this week (don’t worry they feature and sell women’s clothing too), or purchase product from Stock’s collection of jackets, shirts, bow ties, pocket squares and jackets, head over to their site!

Stacy London's Pinterest profile

Part of the amazing Stacy London’s job is to be the cheerleader for all things fashion. One of the things we love about Stacy is her ability to be brutally honest when it comes to “what not to wear,” but to also be a complete sweetheart at the same time. She is an expert when it comes to using beautiful things to make beautiful people, and her Pinterest boards are no exception. With 38 boards and more than 8,700 pins you know that there will be no shortage of inspiration found on Stacy’s profile. Her boards are a treasure chest of all things pretty and practical, from her icons, to nail art, to accessories, interiors, color, shoes, bags and the latest trends. It’s nice to know that wherever you go, you can have a little dose of covetable Stacy advise in your pocket.

Pearl & Ash

Posted by The T on April 15, 2013

We recently had the pleasure of dining with a couple of our favorite fashion editors at culinary rising star, Richard Kuo’s new Pearl & Ash at 220 Bowery and we were instantly enamored.  The name is said to have come from a story from Chef Kuo’s childhood that “a fine jewel does not need a showy setting”.  However, the atmosphere in the 60 seat room was energetic and the decor warm and refined.  It was packed with an eclectic, hip crowd of foodies that can no doubt appreciate the unexpected and fresh offerings.   No specific recommendations needed as we dined family style and shared almost every item on the menu!  Can you blame us?  (This is how we love our menus and our collections… focused and best of the best.)  Service was spectacular as every team member worked in harmony and seemed to exude a passion for food & wine.   Bravo all around.  If you can snag a reservation, take it and enjoy!

Quality over quantity always.
