Made in The USA: Liberty United

Posted by The E on August 27, 2013

Like a sentimental piece of jewelry, one of the reasons we like wearing U.S.-made fashion is for the reminder of what it symbolizes. Liberty United, a jewelry line launched earlier this summer, makes wearing their “remade in the USA” accessories even more meaningful by using metal and bullet shells repurposed from illegal weapons seized by law enforcement. Designed by one of our favorite NYC jewelry-makers Giles & Brother (sister-brother duo Courtney and Philip Crangi), the anti-gun violence rings, bracelets and necklaces of the debut collection each feature the serial number of the decommissioned gun and can be custom engraved for a piece that makes multiple statements.

Habitual on Piperlime: Our VMAS-Inspired Look

Posted by The E on August 26, 2013

With fresh new Habitual merchandise (along with some of our signature styes) back on Piperlime just in time for fall, we couldn’t resist clicking through a few of the thousands of products on the site. The VMAs fresh in our minds, we took a page from Robin Thicke’s ensemble for a more subdued take on the concept, combining a pair of Habitual Elle Moto Skinnies in Licorice with BCBGMaxAzria’s striped blazer. Finished off with a white Michael Kors clutch and Derek Lam’s black flats in the must-have d’orsay style of the season, it’s a rock-and-roll look from head to toe—minus the Beetlejuice references.

Made in the USA: Mary Meyer's Cher Dress

Posted by The E on August 23, 2013

Cher is back! In spite of her recently announced “Farewell” tour, we’re not talking about the singer. No, this is the Cher Dress from Mary Meyer returning for the second fall season in a row. Channeling Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, everyone’s favorite blonde from the movie “Clueless,” the flannel frock updates the late ’90s grunge style for today. Available in green or brown in 100% cotton, it’s handmade in New York. In the words of Cher, don’t be a “fashion victim” or “ensembly challenged,” get this dress before it sells out like last year!

Habitual Fall 2013 Inspiration: The Raven

Posted by The E on August 21, 2013

This season’s collection takes its inspiration in part from American gothic writers such as Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote “All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.” Of course his famed work “The Raven” also evokes the romantic sensibility we chose for fall, as seen on Olivia Wilde who wears the Habitual Amalia Skinny in Licorice in InStyle’s September issue.

Three Outdoor Dining Experiences in NYC

Posted by The E on August 19, 2013

With dusk coming a little sooner as summer winds down, it’s high time to get your fill of al fresco eateries in New York. Recent temperate weather makes an evening excursion all the more pleasant and ideal for the kind of experiences made even better when they take place in NYC. Whether an authentic crab boil in the middle of the city, an outdoor screening on the river or checking out one of Brooklyn’s coolest neighborhoods, you simply can’t beat these summer in the city outings.

Back Forty

Back Forty, a leader in the farm-to-table movement, has a casual environment that makes for a relaxed experience while enjoying seasonal dishes using the freshest ingredients. In addition to favorites like their grass-fed burger and apple-cider doughnuts, Back Forty‘s crab boils borrow aChesapeake Bay tradition that dates back centuries. Every Tuesday until the end of August, the annual “Crab-a-palooza” consists of specially spiced crabs, cornbread, corn on the cob, potatoes and string beans. Accompanied by pitchers of beer and followed with fruit cobblers, it’s summer eating at its finest!

Bark Pop Up

For the second year running, Bark Hot Dogs sets up at Pier 6, serving an abridged menu of its cult dogs to Brooklyn Bridge Park crowds. For a twist on dinner and a movie, the park hosts Movies with a View where you can bring one of Bark’s proprietary pork-and-beef blend sausages to catch a film screened against the Manhattan skyline every Thursday through August 29, 2013.

Pok Pok

Thanks to chef Andy Ricker, a visit to boho enclave Red Hook includes not just rugged urban beauty and 18th century jewelry at Erie Basin, but Pok Pok’s real Thai cooking. A perfect evening starts with a ferry to the Brooklyn nabe, followed by window shopping and capped with a meal in the restaurant’s atmospheric backyard. The jungle-like setting transports diners with strings of vibrant lights and colorful oilcloth-covered tables, laden with dishes like sweetened-soy-glazed pork and the signature wings, as well as with tropical twists on classic cocktails (try the tamarind whiskey sour)—making what can often be an hours-long wait worth it.

Bands We Love: Wild Belle's Fall Tour

Posted by The E on August 16, 2013

If like us you missed the psych rock-meets-reggae croonings of Wild Belle on the festival circuit this summer, you’ll be glad to know the brother-sister duo just announced a fall tour with stops throughout North America, kicking off September 5th. As this video of their performance suggests, the Island vibes of the band’s songs sound as good live as they do recorded. We might even go bi-coastal and catch them at the September 28th Echoplex show in Los Angeles AND their Bowery Ballroom gig on October 8th in NYC.

On Trend: Bell du Jour

Posted by The E on August 14, 2013

From nautical origins and ’90s boot cuts to the hippies that cemented them in fashion history, flares make multiple references while adding glamourous length to legs too. We were thrilled to see Shopbop’s boho-tomboy take on the silhouette in their Fall Denim Edit, featuring a look they dub “Bell du Jour“—our Habitual Harrison Bells styled with an also-on-trend track jacket, sneakers and plenty of accessories.

Single Shot: Maxhash

Posted by The E on August 12, 2013

Leveraging the power of the hashtag, this new app by NYC creative studio HyperHyper aggregates Tumblr and Instagram imagery for a quick glimpse at Internet trends. The dead simple resource allows users to easily search and share by tag, but the best part of Maxhash is how beautifully it presents the visual results, either in a collage or linear stream. It’s a great way to get a real-time look on any given topic (and it’s free), though currently only available for iPhone.
