Three Outdoor Dining Experiences in NYC

With dusk coming a little sooner as summer winds down, it’s high time to get your fill of al fresco eateries in New York. Recent temperate weather makes an evening excursion all the more pleasant and ideal for the kind of experiences made even better when they take place in NYC. Whether an authentic crab boil in the middle of the city, an outdoor screening on the river or checking out one of Brooklyn’s coolest neighborhoods, you simply can’t beat these summer in the city outings.

Back Forty

Back Forty, a leader in the farm-to-table movement, has a casual environment that makes for a relaxed experience while enjoying seasonal dishes using the freshest ingredients. In addition to favorites like their grass-fed burger and apple-cider doughnuts, Back Forty‘s crab boils borrow aChesapeake Bay tradition that dates back centuries. Every Tuesday until the end of August, the annual “Crab-a-palooza” consists of specially spiced crabs, cornbread, corn on the cob, potatoes and string beans. Accompanied by pitchers of beer and followed with fruit cobblers, it’s summer eating at its finest!

Bark Pop Up

For the second year running, Bark Hot Dogs sets up at Pier 6, serving an abridged menu of its cult dogs to Brooklyn Bridge Park crowds. For a twist on dinner and a movie, the park hosts Movies with a View where you can bring one of Bark’s proprietary pork-and-beef blend sausages to catch a film screened against the Manhattan skyline every Thursday through August 29, 2013.

Pok Pok

Thanks to chef Andy Ricker, a visit to boho enclave Red Hook includes not just rugged urban beauty and 18th century jewelry at Erie Basin, but Pok Pok’s real Thai cooking. A perfect evening starts with a ferry to the Brooklyn nabe, followed by window shopping and capped with a meal in the restaurant’s atmospheric backyard. The jungle-like setting transports diners with strings of vibrant lights and colorful oilcloth-covered tables, laden with dishes like sweetened-soy-glazed pork and the signature wings, as well as with tropical twists on classic cocktails (try the tamarind whiskey sour)—making what can often be an hours-long wait worth it.
