Bands We Love: Chvrches

Posted by The E on August 9, 2013

The breezy upbeat sound of Scottish trio Chvrches makes the perfect electropop soundtrack for weekend unwinding. We plan to do little more than put their new single “The Mother We Share” on repeat, find a glass of something chilled, and seriously kick back.

On Trend: White Handbags

Posted by The E on August 7, 2013

By now, you may have noticed that we have a little bit of a thing for white. Whether our Habitual skinnies or a crisp buttoned shirt, the neutral brings simplicity to even the most thrown-together looks.

As an unexpected accent, we love how the current trend of white handbags add a clean jolt of style that feels just right for summer months. We prefer the ladylike look, with some structure and pared down lines, for an accessory that adds edgy polish to casual and work-week outfits alike. Remember, sun-kissed complexions always looks better offset with white—even if it’s an accessory.

Of our favorites, Marc Jacob’s Averell takes top honors. A hot item of the season, modeled after the Pan Am era, its flight bag allurealso won over Garance Doré, whose post on it inspired our deep dive into this season’s fairer purses. For a less pricey option, the enduring charm of the Cambrige Satchel gets an update in white. The double buckled strap with contrast topstitching and visible seams makes it a younger choice with the same assertive profile as The Averell.

Both Mugler’s Muglerette, an edgier take on the elegant concept, and the patent leather and chains of Chanel’s small Boy Flap Bag make for more look-at-me options that are all the more fierce for their absence of saturated color.

And, more conservative but by no means staid, the Bootcamp cross body by Joanna Maxham (available in white from )and Alexander Wang’s Rockie Duffel add unexpected twists to classic bags, ensuring they’ll be staple complements to your wardrobe.

Last week’s launch of the Hickoree’s pop-up at Americana brand Shinola’s new Tribeca outpost celebrated two leaders in keeping U.S. manufacturers in business and getting their goods into consumer’s hands. Their collaboration takes it one step further with a limited-edition picnic basket that Hickoree’s stocked with Balsa wood airplanes and other toys, as well as candy and snacks such as Side Project beef jerky. Available at the Shinola store only through this Sunday, August 11th, 2013, you can also add a picnic blanket, napkins and treats from the in-house Smile cafe for a chic instant picnic!

Obsessions: The Pines, Brooklyn

Posted by The E on August 1, 2013

The Village Voice might put it best when they call Gowanus restaurant The Pines “a destination for food nerds.” With an eclectic menu of New American cooking that changes daily, chef Angelo Romano (of Roberta’s fame) dreams up different brunch, dinner, and drinks on the regular. The offerings change daily, but if our recent meal—from a killer brioche served with mind-blowingly light foie gras to octopus with sour cherries—is any indication, you can’t really go wrong. Drinks too, like one with tequila, sea buckthorn (a tart, nutritious berry), and ginger, delight the palate with inspired combinations and obscure ingredients.

But the best part of The Pines might be the backyard, home to a recently opened outdoor kitchen. Only open Thursday through Sunday, its own original menu includes grilled clams and a half lobster with their creamy lardo and a heavenly vanilla butter. Combing a wildly creative approach to cuisine with the only-in-Brooklyn vibe of laid-back al fresco dining, the restaurant is the latest signal that Gowanus is on the rise. Make a perfect date night of it by getting dinner after the sunset Mr. Sunday dance parties to see for yourself.
